Coin and Feather Apparatus (Free Fall Tube, Newton's Guinea Feather Tube)
The Coin and Feather Apparatus is designed to demonstrate the principles of free fall in a vacuum, showcasing that objects of different masses fall at the same rate when air resistance is eliminated. This educational tool vividly illustrates Newton’s laws of motion.
Caractéristiques principales :
- Visual Learning: Demonstrates how both a coin and a feather fall with the same acceleration in a vacuum, striking the bottom simultaneously.
- Construction: Features a 90 cm long, 5.5 cm diameter plastic tube capped on both ends with rubber stoppers. One end includes a 1/4 NPT ball valve (stopcock) for air evacuation.
- Dual Observations: Under normal atmospheric pressure, the coin falls faster than the feather due to air resistance. When a vacuum is created using a vacuum pump, both the coin and feather fall at the same rate.
Applications:
- Démonstrations pédagogiques : Ideal for physics classrooms to illustrate fundamental concepts of motion and gravity.
- Scientific Experiments: Useful in labs for experiments requiring a vacuum environment to study free fall and other related phenomena.
- Normal Conditions: Invert the tube to observe the coin falling faster than the feather due to air resistance.
- Vacuum Conditions: Use a small vacuum pump (model 0201020060) or Laboratory High Vacuum Pump (model 0201020590) to evacuate the air. Invert the tube to see the coin and feather fall at the same rate without air resistance.
Remarque : Occasionally, the feather may stick to one end and need to be dislodged by gently shaking the apparatus.
